Screening: shorts about the environment
Fri 12 February 2016, 12:30 – 14:00 GMT
As part of our environmental adversity theme, a screening and talk by LifeMosaic who, over the past 2 years, has produced the Territories of Life video toolkit, filming in 24 indigenous and local communities, in 7 languages, and in 8 countries: Indonesia, Philippines, Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Tanzania and Cameroon.
The toolkit is a series of 10 short videos that share stories of resistance, resilience and hope with communities on the frontline of the global rush for land. It helps community members understand land grabs and identify the tactics companies use to obtain lands. It aims to inform the choice between individual land ownership, concession rights on state land, and full communal recognition of ancestral territories. It makes the case for the benefits of secure land rights, for communities, the environment and wider society. It also shares stories of inspiration and hope: a Maasai women’s mass movement to defend their territory, indigenous communication strategies, the ACOFOP example of large-scale community-managed forests, using national and international law to defend rights, and the Plan de Vida approach to long-term visioning and self determined development that is inspiring so many. Territories of Life will support movements to protect and defend community rights and forests for many years to come.
Serge Marti is the executive director of LifeMosaic, and coordinator of the land rights and land grabs programme that produces the Territories of Life toolkit. Serge has directed most of LifeMosaic’s films.
