Event description

Description

Val (Regina Casé in an award-winning role) works as a live-in housemaid for an affluent family in São Paulo. She has happily cooked, cleaned and served them for so long they supposedly consider her one of their own. Yet, as part of the job, she must respect the many unspoken rules which keep her outside the family unit. Although Val may be wonderfully empathetic and caring, and the true maternal figure for the family’s son, she left behind her own daughter to take on the role. After years without contact, Jéssica (Camila Márdila) asks to stay with her mum whilst applying to university. Suddenly, the home’s implicitly understood loyalties and social boundaries are thrown into disarray. Val’s position no longer seems secure. Exploring what it means to be a mother, Anna Muylaert’s outstanding comedy-drama is an astute and moving portrayal of the cyclical nature of life for many working women.
