This special session features Dr Christopher Cocuzzi Cox, creator of History is Not the Past, in conversation with Dr Funke Oyebanjo, Screenwriter and Academic.

We explore the creative process of History is Not the Past as a case study, in how trauma shape’s structure, characterisation, and voice in screen narratives. The conversation will focus on transgenerational slavery, representation, and the challenges of telling difficult stories with care, agency, and responsibility.

This event will ask:

How can screenwriters translate trauma without replicating it?
Whose voices are amplified—or erased—in stories about historical violence?
How do privilege and authorship intersect in shaping these narratives?

We warmly invite students, staff, and external guests to attend and take part in this important conversation.
