Event description

Description

All bronzes are modelled in a more malleable material before they are cast. Historically, artists modelled in clay or wax, building up larger works over armatures, before casting their works in metal.

Spearheaded by artists like Alberto Giacometti, artists in the twentieth century started using fine dental casting plaster to create the surfaces of their models for bronzes. Dame Elisabeth Frink's bronzes were all modelled in plaster over a wire armature. For the beginner, plaster is a difficult medium, but wax, with its combination of pliability and response to gentle heat, is an excellent material for those starting out.

Join Hideki Arichi and Sarah Cate Blake in a wax modelling workshop. Create your own figurative sculpture from armature to worked surface.
