The eighth in a series of talks exploring sculptural practice today, celebrating the Year of Sculpture in the run up to Yorkshire Sculpture International in summer 2019.

Ryan will be talking about her prolific career and work that has often explored themes of containment, psychology and identity-formation.

Her work combines a range of artistic and theoretical factors into carefully considered composition. While primarily working in sculpture, Ryan and her work defy simplistic definition along formal or thematic lines and integrate differing media and components.

Her first solo show was at Arnolfini, Bristol in 1987. Other solo exhibitions include:The Weather Inside, Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, USA (2011), Veronica Ryan, Tate St Ives (2000), Archaeology of The Black Sun, musings after Kristeva, Salena Gallery, Brooklyn, USA (2005), Veronica Ryan, Camden Arts Centre (1995).

Her work is in many public and private collections including: Arts Council Collection, Contemporary Art Society, Sainsbury’s Collection, Tate Collection, The Wakefield art collection at The Hepworth Wakefield, Weltkunst Foundation.

Ryan (b. 1956, Plymouth, Montserrat) is based between New York and the UK. Ryan studied at St Albans, Bath Academy of Art, the Slade School of Fine Art and the School for Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London.

This series of talks has been programmed in partnership with Leeds Beckett University, Leeds Art Gallery and Yorkshire Sculpture International.
