Event description

Description

There are some big sea-changes ahead in early 2019 so get a head start and join us for an inspiring evening with Kiwi marathon ocean swimmer, Tracy Clark.

Tracy is a marathon swimmer, making her way through the Oceans Seven – completing seven straits around the world - the North Channel, Cook Strait, Molokai Channel, English Channel, Catalina Channel, Tsugaru Strait and the Strait of Gibraltar.

Tracy has raised thousands over the years swimming for charities close to her heart. Her efforts and achievements have seen her honoured at the House of Lords for her fundraising for Breast Cancer Now, and was awarded the trophy for ‘Swimming in the Most Arduous Conditions’ of the season by the Channel Swimming Association having battled 6ft waves while swimming the English Channel.

Tearing her left bicep tendon during her English Channel swim, she set herself the goal of training for a shorter distance ice mile during her recovery period. Tracy became the first person in the Netherlands, where she was then based, to swim an ice-mile in January 2015, at a temperature of 3.6 degrees Celsius.

Tracy has since completed the Gibraltar Strait (Spain-Morocco) in 2015, the Catalina Channel (Catalina Island-California mainland) in 2015 and in February 2016, Robben Island-Cape Town in South Africa. In August 2016 she circumnavigated the 28.5 miles around Manhattan Island, which completed her Triple Crown of open water swimming (English and Catalina Channels and Manhattan Island), the first New Zealander to do so.

In 2016, Tracy went to swim the Cook Strait but unfortunately sat on the banks of the Strait for 3 weeks while the wind blew. It's still on the list! In August 2017 Tracy attempted the North Channel (Ireland-Scotland) and got within 1 mile of Scotland in 13 degrees water. After 11 hours she was pulled out due to strong currents but will be back again in September 2019.

Tracy is a qualified swim coach and also holds a five day English Channel Swim Camp in Dover twice a year for future Channel swimmers and a Robben Island Swim Camp in Cape Town. To learn more about her swim camps, visit her website here.

She is incredibly passionate about this extreme sport and ALWAYS swims in her New Zealand swim cap and togs with ‘Kiwi’ on the bum! Her belief is to ‘dream big’, ‘never give up’ and ‘you’re never too old to achieve your dreams’. Come along and hear how Tracy manages to set goals and dig deep when she needs to the most.

Tickets: £30 + Eventbrite fee. Ticket includes wine and cheese evening.

Special thanks to the team at The Dental Surgery for agreeing to host us for the evening.
