Seals and Selkies, facilitated by Jay Kirkland
Jay Kirkland invites you to join her for a creative workshop at the site of her first solo exhibition in one of Dunbar’s oldest harbour buildings, the 350 year old McArthur’s Store at the far end of Victoria Street (on the left, at the edge of Cromwell Harbour).
The workshop draws on Jay’s thought provoking multi-media exhibition of artworks and ornaments made from repurposed sea litter. Come along, reimagine a use for some foraged rubbish and find beauty in it through the eyes of the (almost) life-sized Selkie Jay recently designed for Dunbar’s Harbour Trust.
Selkies, or Silkies as they are known in some places, are creatures who, according to legends from many Scottish islands and coastal regions, change from seal to human form and back again. What do you think a Selkie would make of all our rubbish in the sea, along the tidelines and at the harbour side?
It’s a very serious matter, but litter picking on the beach will never be the same after seeing some of the fun things you can make from it. And, what’s more, while you’re at McArthur’s Store you’ll also be able to use some of it to help us transform the Dunbar Trust’s Selkie.
