Event description

Description

Dark Energy is a mysterious energy that constitutes approximately 70% of the total energy of the observable universe. It is thought responsible for the observed acceleration of the expansion of the Universe.

This talk will discuss the possible nature of Dark Energy and some of the current experiments that are being undertaken to further understand it. In particular two ground-based astronomical survey projects will be described – these are the Dark Energy Survey, involving a wide field imaging camera on the 4 meter Blanco Telescope in Chile, and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) a 5000 optical fibre multi-object spectrometer mounted on the Mayall 4 meter telescope at Kitt Peak Observatory, Arizona.

Biography

Peter Doel was a Physics undergraduate at Durham University from 1983 to 1986. He then undertook a PhD at Durham in the astronomical instrumentation group. As part of his PhD thesis he was involved in the construction of one of the first civilian adaptive optics (AO) systems for astronomy, the Multi-Aperture Real-time Image Normalisation instrument (MARTINI).

After obtaining his PhD in 1990 he took up a post as a Research Assistant within the Durham astronomical instrumentation group mainly working on adaptive optics. He joined the Optical Science Laboratory at UCL as a lecturer in October 1998 and his research since joining UCL has included development of stellar coronographic systems, carbon fibre composite mirrors, active X-ray optics and wide field survey optics. In particular he was responsible for the optical correctors for the Dark Energy Survey camera and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument His current work includes the construction of the optical corrector for the 4MOST multi-object spectrometer for the ESO VISTA telescope at Paranal, Chile.

Places are free but limited so booking in advance is essential.
