Drawing or sketching outdoors by the seaside here in Weymouth & Portland is great fun and relaxing, but it can be daunting at first. These relaxed Seaside Sketchbook Club sessions in a small group will help you get started with a regular sketchbook habit if you are a beginner, or perhaps suggest new approaches in your existing creative practice. We will also cover strategies & kit needed for drawing outside confidently.

Sat 13th September 10.00am - 1pm

Session 1 / Studio @St Georges Centre: Sketchbook Prep - explore various techniques to quickly prep those scary white sketchbook pages! We will also look at a basic artist book format and create a recycled sketchbook. Materials included. Tea, coffee and cake provided for this session.

Sat 20th September 10.00am - 12.30pm

Session 2 / Greenhill Gardens & Beach - create several short sketches and drawings, recording colour, pattern, seascapes and people watching. Bring your sketchbooks and starter kit, plus any additional materials desired. Dress for adverse weather and bring something to sit on, if needed. Enjoy a coffee and share work together at the end of the session.

Sat 27th September 10.00am - 12.30pm

Session 3 / Weymouth Harbourside - explore panoramic formats and dynamic sketching over the session, to include boats & buildings. Bring your sketchbooks and starter kit, plus any additional materials desired. Dress for adverse weather and bring something to sit on, if needed. Enjoy a coffee and share work together at the end of the session.

Sat 11th October 10.00am - 1pm

Session 4 / Studio @St Georges Centre: Image-making - a session to look over the sketchbook work created and an introduction to trace monotype and basic paper stencil screenprinting techniques, or the opportunity to prep more sketchbook pages. Inks, paper, screens and etching press included. Tea, coffee and cake provided for this session.

Frequently asked questions

Is there parking at the St George’s Centre?

There’s free on-street parking on Reforne, and a dedicated free car-park up by St George’s Church, 4 min walk away. There is a private courtyard for drop-offs or disabled parking: please contact me for access.

Do I need to be technically ‘good’ at drawing?

No - sketchbooks can be all about recording colour, light, ideas, pattern, collage, using different mediums, mark-making and collecting printed paper and textures - successful image making doesn’t require that you are a good ‘drawer’!

Should I bring lots of kit and materials?

You are welcome to bring things you are comfortable working with, but we will provide a basic A5/sketchbook and a few drawing / mark-making tools, plus all paper, collage materials and inks for the studio sessions. Low-cost reusing and recyling material is a key part of successful sketchbooking.

Do I need to bring food and drink?

Tea, coffee and cake will be provided FOC at the two studio sessions. At Greenhill, we will meet at one of the cafes, weather permitting. On the harbourside, we will meet at Sticks & Bones in Brewer’s Quay (TBC) where food and drink will be available to buy. Please bring water if required.

Will there be toilet facilities?

The St George’s Centre has toilet provision. Free public toilets are available by the Jurassic Rocks Cafe at Greenhill. The public toilets in Cove Street are 50p to access. Facilities also available at Sticks & Bones.

Will I be able to get a refund?

Refunds will be issued if the sessions are cancelled.

What if the weather is bad for the outdoor sessions?

If the weather forecast is extremely adverse for an outdoor session, then alternative dates will be offered. However, cold, light rain and wind will mean adequate warm & waterproof clothing to be worn - we will find protected areas or make use of inside spaces to sketchbook from.
