About this event

A four hour seaweed workshop including a foraging walk and a cooking session on the beach.

At spring low tide we explore the intertidal zone, searching for the best edible seaweeds. You will learn how to recognise and identify at least 5 different seaweed species depending on the season.

Kerry and Ruth who met working as seaweed harvesters 6 years ago are going to discuss tides, sustainable harvesting practice and the cultural history of seaweed with you.

After, we collectively cook a three course lunch from what we have foraged. The food we create together demonstrates diverse ways to use seaweed in your own cooking.

Location: Castle Beach, Falmouth (we will be waiting by the stairs above the public toilets ) There is parking along the road. It is also only a 15 minute walk from Falmouth Town Train station.

Considerations: Please bring a pair of scissors and a basket or bag to collect the seaweed in. Wear comfortable footwear that you don‘t mind getting wet as we will be walking over some rocks (if you have you could bring some wetsuit boots to explore the rock pools in). Please dress appropriately for the weather.

Group: 13 people max with two people teaching

Food: The menu will be mostly vegan but please let us know if you have any other dietary requirements, we are very happy to accommodate them. Non alcoholic drinks are provided.

Date changing: If for some reason you cannot make the workshop you have booked on to, we are happy to reschedule the date with you up to 14 days before the original workshop.

Weather: We plan the event to be completely outdoors. If however the weather is particularly wet, we will still forage on the beach together (so make sure to bring waterproofs) but we will plan to cook and eat together in a special location undercover. If we decide the weather is too poor to visit the beach enjoyably or safely we will reschedule the date. In over two years we have only had to eat indoors once and we have never had to cancel.
