Event description

Description

Stepney is an area steeped in history and intrigue – a couple of stops away from both the City of London and also the Olympic Station – and yet a place which is unknown to many

In fact it can trace its own past back over 1500 years and in that time it has attracted the rich and famous and the rich and infamous. These include monarchs, roving explorers and people of religion and of charity.

There are not many places that can boast such a wide variety of characters which include amongst others, “Robin Hood’s” arch enemy, the saviour of children and the founder of a famous brewery. In addition, we will also hear tales about William Booth and Thomas Cromwell.

During this walk we will see Stepney’s rich history through its churches, palaces and gorgeous Georgian mansions. This was an area that grew because of the London Docks; when they declined, so did Stepney. But all around, we will see examples of its faded grandeur.

During the Second World War, Stepney was one of the most heavily bombed areas of London. It not only destroyed many of the buildings but also the lives of the people who lived there.

Finally, this is the area where our guide Daniella was brought up. Her family who lived here can be traced back over 200 years so it is an areas she knows well.

You can check travel options at the Transport for London Journey Planner.
