Event description

Description

Sue Rollin explores the fascinating world of the Ottoman court within the palaces of Istanbul: the famous Topkapı Palace, the Dolmabahce Palace, a 19C extravaganza, and other smaller palaces along the shores of the Bosphorus. We glimpse court life both through the eyes of Europeans and as recorded by the Ottomans themselves and the fine costumes, jewels, ceramics and other treasures of the sultans. We enter the harem, a palace within a palace, guarded by black eunuchs, where the Sultan's concubines were secluded from the world outside and where the Queen Mother reigned supreme.

Coffee at 10am, lecture 10.30 - noon, followed by a complimentary glass of wine
