Section 28 and its Legacy

Bethan Rees and David Lynch share their experiences of working as LGBTQ+ teachers under Section 28. Their conversation will include personal and professional reflections on the impact and legacy of the Act. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and interact during the session.

Bethan Rees is the Programme Manager for Schools and Training at The Kite Trust and qualified as a teacher in the same year that Section 28 became law. She has worked in the field of equalities in education throughout her career, including as the Cambridgeshire Local Authority LGBTQ+ lead in partnership with The Kite Trust.

David Lynch is currently a Kite Trust volunteer, supporting Bethan Rees to deliver the education Rainbow Flag Award, a quality marker for LGBTQ+ inclusivity in schools and colleges. His career began in 1990 as a secondary school teacher in Wales, at the height of Section 28’s insidiously homophobic impact on lesbian, gay and bisexual teachers, the curriculum and school policies.

When you sign up for a free ticket you will receive the invitation to the Zoom meeting and instructions for how to use it. You will not have to use video, and if you don't want to or aren't able to speak on the call, you can also use the chat option in Zoom. If it is easier, you can also call into a Zoom meeting just using your phone. All the details will be on the email from Eventbrite.

To book your place, register to attend (it's free!) You do not have to have an Eventbrite account to attend the event, but in case you lose the confirmation email it is easier to set up one in advance.
