'See ME rather than dementia’ - Assessment Practice and Dementia under the Mental Health Act

Are you an Approved Mental Health Professional involved in Mental Health Act assessments with service users with dementia? Would you like to make your assessment practice as person centered as possible?

In this seminar, using the principles of the recent 'Manual for good social work practice -supporting adults who have dementia produced by the Department of Health recently we will explore good practice in assessments under the Mental Health Act for a person with a dementia.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Understanding and working with challenging behaviour
  • Person-centered crisis intervention with people with a dementia
  • Person-centered communication and observational techniques
  • Risk enablement in relation to dementia
  • Assessment techniques based on life story work
  • Alternatives to admission and support for care givers.

Facilitator: Ben Bano, Director of Telos Training Ltd (www.telostraining.co.uk) and he has been a social worker for over 40 years. He specialises in delivering training on person centered approaches to dementia care and he has delivered workshops on Assessment Practice and Dementia to ten local authorities in recent years.
