Event description
Female empowerment fitness panel session with four inspiring women, followed by an introductory strength and weightlifting class

About this Event

Running order: panel session - 3pm / Strength training class - 4.30pm

This is for the tier 2 ticketing for the See My Strong event, which includes the panel session with Michelle Elman, Tally Rye, Laura Hoggins and myself, Poorna Bell, as well as the practical introduction to strength class which starts at 4.30pm.

I've teamed up with my coach Jacek Toczydlowski (@jacked_t) who is the founder of my weightlifting team, Barfight (@barfghit_team)and Elevate's Head Coach of Strength (@elevaterichmond).

The weightlifting section hasn't always been a welcoming place for women. But upon discovering weights, I realised that this was a type of fitness I really enjoyed, and hugely boosted my confidence levels. I took it to the next level with Jack, who somehow turned me from a weightlifter who was obsessed with my body weight, into an amateur powerlifter who is possibly the most comfortable she's been in her body. Jack's coaching style is a reason why so many women are in my team - he is super knowledgable and teaches in a way that is easy to connect with, and most importantly, supportive for women.

I wanted to share the safe, welcoming space that I train in, with other women who have never trained with weights before, or perhaps who've dabbled with it but want a proper introduction. This will suit anyone who wants to try strength training - not just powerlifting.

In the two-hour session (which can run longer for those who want to), Jack will work through the three fundamental lifts: squat, bench and deadlift, alongside coach Neha Prasad-Ainsworth, who is the current British champion in powerlifting for GPC.

They are both legends, but utterly humble and most important - EXCELLENT coaches who train across all levels. You don't have to worry about how much you can lift - this is a great space to learn, ask questions, and try something new.

Important details: Bring the standard gym kit you like to work out in, and because the gym doesn't allow shoes from the outside due to keeping the mats hygienic, you'll need to disinfect your trainers and bring them in a bag. We'll provide snacks, but you may want to bring your own food to keep fuelled.

Extra details for the panel session which starts at 3pm ICYMI:

I've invited a stupendously talented panel of women - Michelle Elman, Laura Hoggins and Tally Rye, who work across fitness, mental wellbeing and body positivity to discuss their own journeys around strength, physicality, aesthetic, and mental health, but most importantly to show how women can access and interpret it for them in their own way.

Michelle Elman (@scarrednotscared) is an award-winning body positive activist and accredited life coach with a collective following of over 285k people on Instagram. Her TedX talk titled "Have You Hated Your Body Enough Today?" has been viewed over 40,000 times.

Tally Rye (@tallyrye) is a personal trainer and co-host of the Fit and Fearless podcast with BBC 5 Live and soon to be author of Train Happy, which comes out in the new year. She is passionate about helping people to establish healthy and intuitive relationships to exercise as well as fight for equality in an industry where many feel unseen, unwelcome and unrepresented.

Laura Hoggins aka @laurabiceps, is an elite PT, podcaster and author of Lift Yourself. Laura is the Head of Brand at Foundry Fit and works hard to dispel the myths around women taking up weightlifting.

I'll be interviewing my guests about their own journeys, how to get into fitness, building confidence, navigating the dreaded free weights section in commercial spaces, how to be comfortable in your own body and as always, pushing above that glass ceiling for women when it comes to strength and aesthetic. This is an event for women across a wide range of abilities and fitness interests - not just weightlifting.

The event: We'll start promptly at 3pm, and it will be at the Elevate Martial Arts & Strength gym next to Richmond station (it's right at the top of the building). We'll also have time for Q&A, and there'll be goody bags and treats by @boxingbakerldn.

Important info: seating is on the padded mats in the gym, so if you need something with a back support do let us know - we'll have limited availability however.
