At a time when there are droughts everywhere and food prices are increasing, Vandana Shiva, in conversation with Satish Kumar, will examine the crucial issue of saving and sharing seeds as a crucial part of food security.
Vandana Shiva – A world-renowned environmental thinker, activist, physicist, feminist and philosopher of science. She serves as an ecology adviser to several organisations including the Third World Network and the Asia Pacific People’s Environment Network. In 1982 she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, which led to the creation of Navdanya, a woman-centred movement to protect the bio-diversity and integrity of living resources in India and to promote organic farming and fair trade. In 2004, she started Bija Vidyapeeth, an international college for sustainable living. Her latest book is Seed Freedom. She is the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award.
Satish Kumar – A former Jain monk and long-term peace and environmental activist, Satish walked 8,000 miles for peace. Last year was the 50th anniversary of this tremendous achievement and this year is the 40th anniversary of his role as editor-in-chief of Resurgence – now Resurgence & the Ecologist. In 2000, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Education from the University of Plymouth and a year later he received an Honorary Doctorate in Education from the University of Lancaster and was also awarded the Jamnalal Bajaj International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Abroad. He is the author of many books including No Destination and the presenter of the BBC2 Natural History film Earth Pilgrim.
