Event description

Description

Come and join us at the Skip Garden to celebrate all things seeds, the signals of the beginning of Spring and the stirrings of new life. We will be growing, cooking, sprouting, swapping, creating, wondering and marvelling at the knowledge, qualities and life that seeds hold.

We believe that now, more than ever, we must reconnect with the land. In the last 100 years, 80% of plant biodiversity has been lost in Europe. Alongside this loss, we are also losing the local knowledge, culture and skills of women and men who know how to farm in a sustainable way, and who place seed saving at the heart of their farming system.

We would like to contribute to reconnecting with the land and celebrate the life that seeds hold and the knowledge of our ancestors through bringing people together at this gathering in the Skip Garden, learning from each other and enjoying good company and good food.

The event is broken down into morning and afternoon. The morning activities are geared to adults, including the home-cooked lunch. The afternoon activities are geared to families with children.

Timings for the event are as follows

10:30 - 11:00 - Arrivals, hot drinks and seedy nibbles

11:00 - 11:15 - Welcome by Global Generation and young people

11:15 - 13:00 - Workshops for participants to choose, including

  • Workshop 1: Introduction to seed saving with London Freedom Seed Bank

  • Workshop 2: Exploring and milling ancient grains with Sustainable Food Story

  • Workshop 3: Creating batiks inspired by the beauty of seeds through the microscope with Global Generation

13:00 - 14:00 - Home-cooked communal lunch cooked by our Skip Garden Kitchen chefs and young people, including pizzas with grains milled in the morning workshop

14:00 - 16:00 - Family activities including cooking, growing and making with seeds - run by Global Generation and a 'Speedy sprouting - make your own portable farm' workshop run by Secret Seed Society

Throughout the day there will be stalls and opportunities for seed swapping. There will be seeds grown from members of the London Freedom Seed Bank and Heritage Seed Library to swap.

The event is free but please book so that we can cater accordingly.

Background to the event

This event is part of a wider project Global Generation is running called 'Seeds for a Better World', funded by HLF. With young people as co-creators, this project aims to connect to and give back to our diverse natural heritage through workshops; the creation of new Seed Gardens; the unearthing of older people’s memories; the creation of a mobile interactive seed bank; and Seed events to bring together diverse groups of people to swap seeds and learn from each other.

I am a seed, I give life, plants and food. I am the key to humanity. Without me we wouldn’t know the world as we know it today. I am underestimated and belittled. I am so valuable yet so small and carry so much to help life. - Christabelle, 15 years
