Seeing Us: seeking Greater Manchester women in Lancashire Archives
Date: 10 October (next one is 24th October and we'll add a weekend date.)
Time: 1- 3pm
Location: University of Bolton, Chancellors Mall
Where are the women in Greater Manchester’s galleries, offices and archives? That’s the question at the heart of 'Seeing Us', a project from GM4Women's culture workstream co-led by Sarah Galligan and Amina Ali. We’re exploring the representation of women in the arts across Greater Manchester – from those working behind the scenes, to those on display, to those whose contributions have been lost to history.
Through Seeing Us, we’re mapping who’s working in the arts, who’s represented in exhibitions and who’s tucked away in archives – including a focus on working-class women whose voices and visibility have often been overlooked.
Seeing Us – in history
We plan to ask this question: Where are the women? of gallery and museum archives: Are women hiding there or have they been overlooked?
How can you help?
Join Amina and Sarah to search through never-before explored archive boxes, scanning/reading articles, images and text and auditing them for their representation of women. We'll provide guidance as to what notes to take so that we're consistent as we audit archives across GM's cultural sector.
