Course overview

The aim of this course is to show the method for the seismic acquisition (on land and offshore) and processing of data. It will start from the physical principles on which this technology is based (waves, ray, reflection, refraction…), passing through the digital tools for processing, and ending with some real cases and practical exercise on real data.

Learning objectives

The main course objectives are:

  • To help geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers to gain a thorough understanding of the concepts and practical applications of seismic acquisition and processing;
  • To prepare participants to learn the physics of waves and different kind of seismic acquisition methods;
  • To explore the physics of standard data processing workflow and its importance in terms of output data and special needs of the interpreter;
  • To experience the workflow and gain knowledge and experience

This course is suitable for geophysicists or geologists willing to improve their skills in acquisition and processing of seismic profiles.

Course outline

Introduction to a collection of worldwide seismic images

Principles of seismic acquisition: land and marine sources and receivers, 2D and 3D spread types, roll-along and multiple coverage

Waves and rays: body waves, ray trajectories and traveltime curves, reflection at the interfaces and the convolution model, the interpreter’s wishes, complicating matters like attenuation and noise

Principles of digital seismic processing: Fourier spectra, data visualisation, editing, filtering, static corrections, amplitude recovery, CMP gathering, velocity analysis, NMO correction and stack

The fundamental concepts: stack and migration

Time and depth imaging: time or depth migration, pre-stack migration, common image gathering and focusing analysis

Introduction to 3D seismic: land and marine spread geometries of 3D acquisition, the effectiveness of 3D migration, diagnostic attributes, acquisition footprints

Practical experiences on real data: data visualization and filtering, velocity analysis and NMO correction, stacking, migration
