Event description
What criteria can an employer use in selecting employees for redundancy and how should those criteria be applied?

About this Event

We have come a long way since employers routinely selected employees for redundancy by applying the sole criterion of 'last in, first out'. But selection criteria still need to be fair and their is a tension between the desirability of objective and transparent criteria and the more subjective question of which employees best fit in with the employer's future needs. In this webinar I will explain what Tribunals look for in a fair redundancy selection - and why the approach of some employers may get them into trouble. In particular we will consider:

  • How subjective criteria such as attitude and potential can be applied fairly
  • Whether employers can take absence into account without straying into disability discrimination
  • The process of applying selection criteria and comparing the results of employees in the pool for selection
  • The pitfalls of 'selection by interview' - and how to avoid them
  • When employees should be 'slotted in' to a new role and when they should be subject to the selection process

There will be plenty of time for questions - I'm always happy to run over time to make sure everyone's question gets answered. The webinar will be recorded so that - provided you register in advance - you can catch up if you are not available at the scheduled time, or watch it again at your leisure.
