Self care strategies and other good practices for those woriking in the refugee sector.

About this Event

Course overview

Working with refugees and asylum seekers can be a demanding work. Nevertheless front line staff often do not receive sufficient training on how to cope with hearing the psycho-social problems their clients are facing, how to handle the 'difficult cases', and internal conflicts of holding boundaries over supporting a client in need.

The Refugee council has long ago recognized the importance of regular support and self-care strategies to protect staff from potential negative impacts of working with people in severe distress.

This course introduces the different ways caring for others can affect professionals working with particularly vulnerable groups and explores strategies to mitigate their impact on self well-being.

Aim and Objectives:

  • The refugee experience
  • Risk assessment
  • Impacts of empathy
  • Vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue
  • Making a self-care plan
