Event description

Description

Please note we have combined what used to be two courses into one day. If you have already been on Assessing Risk or Practical Interventions self harm training this will not be appropriate for you to go on again.

Self- Harm & Suicidal Intent: Assessing Risk & Practical Interventions

This course specifically addresses self- harm and suicidal thoughts and behaviours amongst children and young people.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the day delegates should be:-

  • Aware of the relationship between harm to self, mental health problems and environmental stressors.

  • Able to identify concerning warning signs.

  • Equipped to carry out an initial assessment with children and young people who may be depressed, suicidal or self-harming.

  • Aware of appropriate early intervention and risk management techniques.

  • Confident in knowing when and how to refer these young people to the CAMHS service.

  • Aware of the ways assessment and intervention strategies are linked.

  • Able to plan interventions informed by assessment and based on robust theoretical underpinning.

  • Equipped with practical strategies to support young people who are depressed and/ or self- harming in ways appropriate to their role and work setting.

  • More confident when working with young people for whom low mood, depression and self- harm are difficulties.

Ideal for: Front line practitioners with safeguarding, pastoral and therapeutic responsibilities. This course is particularly relevant for staff who are responsible for managing risk and safety plans; for example in schools and universal healthcare settings.

Overview: Robust assessment of risk is vital for the safety of young people who harm themselves or who have suicidal thoughts. To be safe and effective any interventions need to be based on such an assessment. This course explores the potential risks and provides a clear and practically useful initial assessment and risk management tools. Then, building on this foundation of robust assessment skills we use case studies to explore a wide range of evidence- based direct work interventions. Delegates will have the opportunity to make an intervention plan and “have a go” with a variety of techniques.

Payments:

Please note we prefer to receive payments through a credit/debit card and this is the only option we now offer for you to purchase the course on Eventbrite (unless you are eligible for a free place). If you do not have this option in your organisation to fund the course in this way please contact us at admin.camhstraining@nhs.net to discuss alternative payment options.
