Self Harm

Self Harm

By South Glos Parent Carers
Online event

Overview

Self harm has become a way for many young people to manage their stress but is an area that often carries lot of stigma.

Please note that, due to our funding, our workshops are only open to parents/carers who live or work in South Gloucestershire (or who have a child at school in South Glos).

This session will NOT be recorded and is a camera ON event due to the sensitive nature of the subject. To keep this session a safe space for families to ask questions this workshop is for parent carers only.

Satveer Nijaar, from 'Attention Seekers?', leads this self-harm awareness session for parents, taking into account the parental perspective and the emotions that can arise.

The session covers:

  • Statistics
  • Definition – what is self-harm?
  • Triggers – what can lead to self-harm?
  • Functions – what are the functions of the behaviour to the individual
  • How to broach suspected self-harm – transferable tips and tools
  • Best practice response to a disclosure including language use – what to say/not to say
  • Alternative strategies/focusing upon stopping self-harm
