Self Love Portrait Club

Join us for this weekly drawing session on Thursday evenings in Cullompton!

Whether you’re a full-time artist or you haven’t drawn since you were six, Self Love Portrait Club is a space to explore your creativity, practise drawing from a model, and build your self-confidence by sitting for others.

HOW IT WORKS:

1. Everyone poses* at some point during the evening (up to 15mins each, depending on number of participants)

2. Everyone gets to create

3. Everyone is welcome, regardless of ‘skill’ or ‘experience’

4. The club is not tutored, but it is facilitated (so you won’t be left wondering what to do)

5. Portrait club is an inclusive, body positive and supportive space. Anyone who doesn’t respect this will be asked to leave

6. Portraiture is what you make it. Bring your own materials and follow whatever creative path you fancy (but remember we must leave the room as we find it)

*clothed, not naked!

WHAT SHOULD I BRING:

You need to bring your own materials to the Self Love Portrait Club.

You will need:

📃 Something to create ON (sketchbook, notepad, canvas, scrap paper, literally whatever you want)

✏️ Something to create WITH (pencil, pen, oil pastels, watercolour, etc. anything not messy)

If it’s your first time doing something like this, I’d recommend getting a sketchbook that’s at least A3 size - ideally A2. It might seem daunting but it’s a lot easier to draw larger than smaller.

I’d also recommend a 2B pencil and a pencil sharpener. Rubbers are optional, but I’d recommend not using them (or using only very sparingly) - they tend to encourage perfectionism.

PARKING:

There is free parking at the Walronds accessible from Tiverton Road. N.B. If you put The Walronds into Google Maps it will not take you to the carpark. If you want to use the car park, put in 'Shortlands Lane'.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be good at drawing to attend?

Absolutely not! SLPC is about having fun and exploring your creativity. Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome.

Do you supply materials?

No, you will need to bring your own materials to draw with.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

Yes! Wheelchair access is through the main front door. Unfortunately there is no wheelchair access from the car park, so I'd recommend parking on the street or in one of the general car parks.

Do I have to model?

Yes. Modelling is a key part of the SLPC experience, and we find that although it might seem daunting at first, it's actually a very empowering experience. N.B. This is a portrait class, not a life drawing class, so there's no naked modelling! :)

I can't make this date - will there be others?

Yes, we run weekly sessions on Thursday evenings. Make sure you follow us on Instagram @selfloveportraitclub to stay up to date with dates.
