Self Neglect and Hoarding Awareness Level 1

About this Event

This course has been developed to provide an awareness of what constitutes self neglect and will explore the key concepts of supporting the individual as well as providing learners with knowledge of hoarding as a disorder. The Care Act 2014 has formally recognised self-neglect as a type of abuse and neglect meaning that people who self neglect can now be supported by safeguarding adult approaches, as well as receiving more general support from practitioners.

This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:

Case studies, group discussions, small group activities and Safeguarding Adults documentation

This course has been developed and mapped to current occupational standards, qualification frameworks and the following documents and resources:

After attending this course, learners will be able to:

Identify what constitutes self neglect

Identify the factors that could signal self neglect

Have a working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act in relation to self neglect

Identify when the Court of Protection could be considered

Explain the importance of multi agency information sharing and creating robust risk management plans

Explain the principles of intervention

Describe the key concepts of supporting the individual

List the challenges that may be encountered when working with someone who self-neglects

Explain what hoarding is

List other conditions that can coexist with hoarding

Explain how hoarding can manifest

Describe the impact hoarding can have on an individual

Explain how to support an individual with solution based support
