Event description

Description

Would you like to take your self-portrait with a large format view camera?

Megan will be conducting one-on-one portrait sessions to demonstrate the process behind the images in her current exhibition ‘To Touch Peace (of floating things)’ – a collection of works that discusses the artist’s experience as a gender nonconforming trans woman in a world that holds little space for diversified experiences of gender. The process will take up to 30 minutes, after which Megan will take the exposed films to be developed and then provide each participant with contact prints (4x5 inches) from their session.

The Process

Participants will be invited to stand infront of Megan’s camera, where they will be handed the shutter release and given control over the exact moment that the exposure is made. This process will be a reflection of the Untitled series:

These pieces are the artist’s first foray into self-portraiture since starting her transition, which mark a distinct departure from the colourful, quiet, emotional compositions that make up the majority of her recent work. Though her personal struggles are significantly appeased by transition - as a trans woman with a complex gender identity, she continues to feel stifled by society’s incessant tendency to obsess over redundant binaristic understandings of gender, damaging not only to herself and other gender non-conforming people, but to the progression of society as a whole. In these works she takes charge of her own representation.

With pneumatic cable release in fist, and the use of her gaze to command the attention of her viewers, she is tackling head-on some of the issues which, in her previous work, remained internal to herself.

What you will receive

The price of the session is £20 (before booking fees) and will include:

- Three large format photographic negatives, with multiple contact prints (4x5 inches)
- High quality digital copies on disk

Participants are also invited to join a free photomontage and poetry session on Wednesday 22nd. Participants can bring their portraits and further explore their ideas of identity by building found poetry and block out poems from provided materials.

(Please email meganscott_30@hotmail.com if you wish to discuss options for larger prints or alternative options.)

Megan describes herself as a queer visual artist, whose practice uses photography and language to discuss identity, gender politics and emotional narrative. Her work plays with departing from traditional photographic values, whilst still opting for a highly analogous approach.
