Event description

Description

Find out about the practical aspects of self-publishing and marketing children's/young adult books from Karen Inglis, a successful self-published children’s author with close to 10,000 sales across five titles.

The workshop will cover:

  • The key options and best practice for self-publishing children’s books in print or as eBooks – and how to avoid unscrupulous service providers
  • How print and eBook book distribution, discounting and royalties work
  • Why it’s crucial to work with beta readers and editors before self-publishing – and how to find them
  • How to find and work with illustrators
  • Why print rules when it comes to children’s publishing and why face-to-face events are critical for sales
  • How to approach bookshops, schools and libraries
  • How an author website and social media presence can support children’s book marketing - with tips for setting these up for little or no cost
  • Options for advertising children’s books online (overview)
  • Free tips, checklists and a resource list of links and tools (some free, some paid for) that can help set up and promote children’s books and make them more discoverable online
  • Recommendations of organisations and online groups that offer mutual support

This workshop is particularly helpful if you are currently planning or writing a children’s or young adults book and haven’t yet decided whether to self-publish or find a traditional publisher, if you have written your book but had difficulty finding an agent/publisher or if you have an agent but wish to explore all publishing options. How to write for children is not covered, although resource links will be provided.

There is an NCP car park near to the venue. We can offer an all day parking ticket for £4. If you would like to do this please choose the ticket with parking option, as these discounted tickets must be purchased in advance. If you have any queries please email marketing@red-lighthouse.org.uk, or telephone 01530 830811

Karen’s illustrated chapter book 'Eeek! The Runaway Alien', praised for encouraging reluctant readers, has been used by the Beanstalk charity in support of the Get London Reading campaign. Her popular time travel adventure 'The Secret Lake' was considered for adaptation by CBBC. She is Children’s Advisor at the Alliance of Independent Authors and has been a regular speaker on panels about children’s self-publishing.
