FLONA
Self-Made Feminist
FLONA was born in 1999, and since then she has been wondering what the fuck is up with this world. She has always been a pain in the ass for everyone around her because of her habit of asking annoying questions such as: Why? The problem is that the answer tends to be “Because you are a girl”, an unacceptable answer to FLONA.
Performer Denice Bourbon once said of FLONA that she is a “Self-made Feminist”. She was reacting to the many stories FLONA had told her about life growing up in Al-Sukhnah, Syria, about being a teenage refugee and a woman of color in conservative Bavaria, as well as about her new beginning in Vienna and exploring her queerness. From a very strict and conservative upbringing to her emancipation as she reached adulthood, FLONA had forged her path and articulated her understanding of feminism through these challenges; her feminism was self-reflective, and indeed Self-Made.
