Description

What does it mean to ‘belong’ to Exeter, Plymouth, Torquay, or to Devon? Large institutions between them spend hundreds of millions of pounds. Could more of this be harnessed to generate benefits for local people and businesses, whilst still achieving best value? Could responding to the climate emergency be part of the ‘social value’ this spending creates? New Prosperity Devon is organising three sessions on Thursday 26th September where we’ll explore how procurement and local investment might support an inclusive, resilient economy in Devon, and you’re invited.

Event 2:

Purposeful Procurement

Implementing social value frameworks in institutional spending plans

Tom Lloyd Goodwin, Centre for Local Economic Strategies; Prof Mickey Howard from the University of Exeter Business School; plus representatives of local authorities and institutions in Devon

Thursday 26th September, 2.30 - 4.30pm, Pearson Teaching Room, 'Building:One', University of Exeter Business School http://www.exeter.ac.uk/visit/directions/streathammap/areaamap/

An opportunity to explore the scope for using procurement as a tool to reach institutional goals as well as securing best value in Devon. As many local authorities look for ways to speed the decarbonisation of their economy in the face of climate change, progressive procurement policies offer an important tool to pursue this agenda, as well as goals around retaining purchasing power in the local area, supporting local jobs and skill development, the living wage, sustainable supply chains, promoting resilience and local health and well-being. We can learn from existing practice what might be achieved and what obstacles might be encountered. The collaboration between anchor institutions in Preston is just one of the stories to be shared in this session, hosted with the Global Systems Institute from the University of Exeter.

This event will be preceded by a more detailed talk about the Preston model. For that event, sign up here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/community-wealth-building-the-preston-model-tickets-69994121301
