Applying theories of knowledge and methodology in your own research

Charlotte Cross

In this third and final seminar on issues relating to epistemology in research, we will think more about how the material covered in the previous two sessions relates to your own doctoral research. The purpose of the seminar is to enable students to articulate how key concepts in epistemology and methodology apply to their own research.

In order to facilitate this discussion we would like to ask you to do some preparation before the seminar. Each participant will be asked to briefly summarise the research project they are developing to the group and to outline over 5 - 10 minutes:

 1.     What are you attempting to find out through your research and how will you know whether you have done so?

You may want to think about: where you fit in terms of the broad approaches to epistemology discussed in previous weeks; whether your approach is informed by disciplinary conventions and assumptions; and how your own approach is similar/different to the way in which this topic is addressed in existing academic literature, in development practice, or by potential research participants.

2.     What are the implications of this for how you will go about undertaking the research?

You might consider: the relationship between your understanding of knowledge and knowledge generation and the theoretical and methodological approaches you will use; how you will go about collecting research data; whether you might encounter alternative ways of knowing in ‘the field’; and the relationship between you as the researcher and any research participants.

This is not intended to be a formal presentation and you are certainly not expected to have fully formed answers to the questions above, so please don’t worry! This is an opportunity to consolidate your understanding of material covered in the previous seminars and to start to discuss some of these issues in a supportive environment as you develop your research project.

Structure of the seminar

  • Introduction and brief presentation from the convenor on epistemological and methodological principles in her own research.
  • Student presentations and discussion.
  • Time to consider any questions about content covered during these seminars.
