'Bradford and Rushdie in 1989: The Year of British Islam’
Dr Shabbir Akhtar (University of Oxford)
'What were the achievements and consequences of the events of 1989 for British Muslims? The Muslim response to Salman Rushdie made the British Muslims into a single community for the first time in their history in Britain - and thereby destroyed 'the myth of return' to their homeland. A new generation intended to stay here and demanded their rights in the language of liberal democracy. More crucially, 1989 was the first time that secular humanism suffered a cultural defeat in the west since the French Revolution'.
Dr Shabbir Akhtar is a lecturer at the Faculty of Theology and Religions at Oxford University. Shabbir was brought up in Bradford and later read Philosophy at Cambridge University. He is the author of a number of books ranging from 'Be Careful with Muhammad (1989, on the Rushdie affair)' to his recent Islam as 'Political Religion' (Routledge, 2010). During the late 80’s Shabbir regularly appeared on the media to comment on the Rushdie Affair.
