Created Out of Mind

Based at the Wellcome Collection's Hub in London, Created Out of Mind is an interdisciplinary team of scientists, visual artists, musicians, broadcasters, clinicians and carers, aiming to explore, challenge and shape perceptions and understanding of dementias through science and the creative arts.

Their work explores what dementia means to us all, challenges traditional definitions and common misconceptions, and unlocks what we can learn about art, consciousness and the brain from the experiences of people with dementia.

Sebastian Crutch will explore the impacts of dementias which primarily affect not just memory, but also vision, language, social behaviour and other skills. His talk will focus on some of the experiences, questions and uncertainties often described by people living with these conditions, and consider how we can all better recognise, understand and adapt to the challenges they may bring. Seb will also discuss how creative arts activities might be adapted to better suit people’s retained skills and senses.

The seminar is for anyone with a professional or personal interest in the arts and dementia, including artists, cultural organisations, and health and care professionals.

About the speaker:

Professor Sebastian Crutch is Director of Created Out of Mind, a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol), Professorial Research Associate, and Alzheimer's Research UK Senior Research Fellow.

Seb's research has focused on the neuropsychological investigation of perceptual function and language in individuals with neurodegenerative disease and stroke. Particular interests include the exploration of visual disorders and disease progression in posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), and analysis of refractory access disorders, and abstract and concrete conceptual knowledge.

He has a particular passion for developing patient and carer support groups and helps run the PCA Support Group. He was awarded the 2012 British Neuropsychological Society Elizabeth Warrington Prize and 2015 Alzheimer's Society Dementia Research Leaders award.
