Seminar: Interactive Documentaries in Educational Practices
Wed 11 May 2016, 12:00 – 13:00 BST
Danai Mikelli, PhD Candidate, School of Media and Performing Arts, Coventry University
This session will explore the rapidly evolving field of Interactive Documentary (i-doc) as methodology and educational practice. Interactive documentary has been theorised as a new learning system, offering new ways to approach, understand, play and learn from reality (Gifreu & Moreno, 2014).
Drawing upon existing literature and using examples from her own research, Danai will look at the potential of interactive non-fiction to enhance the field of education and knowledge transfer. In the second part of this session, participants will be introduced to interactive storytelling and experiment with Storygami, an interactive video tool suitable for educational purposes.
Danai Mikelli is a PhD Candidate in the School of Media and Performing Arts at Coventry University. She holds an MA in Documentary Practice from the University of Bristol. Her doctoral research provides an ethnographic exploration of the ways in which young people engage with interactive documentary and focuses on the technological, experiential, relational and discursive dimensions of a series of interventions introducing this tool in the context of Critical Media Education. She is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
