Description

Title: Structural Health Monitoring Research at Cardiff University

Abstract:

Karen will talk about about recent projects, most of which are in conjunction with Industry, and some of the key advances that the Cardiff group has made in acoustic emission monitoring of damage in structures. She will also give a flavour of the direction of future projects.

Bio:

Karen is Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Cardiff University. Her career began at Rolls-Royce in Bristol where she completed an undergraduate apprenticeship reading Mechanical Engineering at UWIST, followed by a PhD at the University of Wales College Cardiff. She then worked as a senior engineer at AB Electronic Products, where she was responsible for developing automotive products for companies such as BMW, Jaguar and Rover.

She joined Cardiff University as an engineering lecturer in 1990, becoming Head of the School of Engineering in 2010. In 2012 she became Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering, before taking up the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor in April 2017. Karen is married with two children aged 19 and 16.

Since moving into academia over 27 years ago, Karen has helped to build the now substantial international reputation of acoustic emission (AE) research at Cardiff University, with research resulting in technology that has greatly improved the safety monitoring of bridges and other structures. Karen is a Council member for STFC and a member of the ESPRC Strategic Advisory Network, having previously served as the external Chair of the EPSRC Engineering Strategic Advisory Team.

In 2016 Karen was named in the top 50 most influential women engineers and in the 2017 New Years Honours list she was awarded a CBE for services to engineering and for the advancement of women in science and engineering.
