Cherry Garden School is Southwark's specialist primary school for children with complex learning differences from age 2-11. This is the third of three SEND Toolkits which we are running in the remainder of this academic year, suitable for Learning Support Assistants, Teachers and other school staff working with pupils with a high level of need. They are designed to give you training in some of the strategies we use at Cherry Garden which you could take back to use in your own setting.
This third SEND Toolkit day is focused on developing early reading, writing and maths skills in primary age children. It will help you if you are working with any children who are able to engage with simple and engaging reading, writing and maths tasks at their level, but cannot access the main class teaching and learning. These children could be working anywhere betweenCherry Garden Branches 6-10.
You will receive training from our Outreach team at Cherry Garden (Alice Frost & Anna Parsons) in a range of key literacy and maths strategies that we use at Cherry Garden to support pupils. Topics will include: Phonics Bucket, the Reading Project, Colourful Semantics, Whole Body Writing, Maths Stories, and building independent learning skills.
You will also spend two half hour slots in our classes during the day, learning about how to engage, communicate, interact and play with our fantastic pupils, and how we support their reading, writing and maths skills.
Places on this course are limited to 10 people, so as not to overwhelm the children with too many new faces.
We have two other SEN Toolkit courses, which will have a different focus. Please choose the course most relevant to the children you are working with.
- 27th March 2025- Complex Needs in the Early Years
- 8th May 2025 - Developing early communication
If you would like advice on which course would be most suitable for you, please email outreach@cherrygardenschool.co.uk and we would be pleased to help. If you have missed the course you need, or it is full, please email to let us know, as it may be possible to run it again.
This training is now free of charge for all Southwark state primary schools and maintained nursery schools. Maximum two places per school, as spaces have to be limited to 10 participants.
