Event description

Description

Join the Royal College of Physicians for an intriguing voyage via the senses to the fascinating and sensual world of Sir Thomas Browne, 17th century polymath, writer, doctor and collector extraordinaire.

This unique and atmospheric museum late is presented with the celebrated AVM Curiosities, an innovative practice exploring the relationship between art, food and history through amazing events and edible interventions since 2011.

Scent is the sense most closely linked to memory, making it the perfect vehicle for storytelling. Inspired by 'A cabinet of rarities', AVM Curiosities will take three examples from the exhibition and transform them into an aromatic account of the curious collections of Sir Thomas Browne.

The first scent-chamber will be an aromatic ostrich egg, a popular 17th century curiosity, perfumed with fragrances that Thomas Browne himself may have worn in his lifetime.

The second scent-chamber is paired with the skin & urine case, consisting of a sweet-smelling, visual representation of a symptom and cure for diabetes, aptly titled ‘Urine Trouble’.

The final aromatic coupling is an edible perfume to accompany the herbarium, ending with ‘The Sweet Smell of Success’.

Apothecaries jar, cauterising iron and 17th century medical text books.

The evening also features a revealing talk on early modern odours by academic, author and 17th century scent expert, Sophie Read, and the oportunity to view the acclaimed exhibition 'A cabinet of rarities': the curious collections of Sir Thomas Browne

"...the Royal College of Physicians have resurrected Browne and his enthusiasms in a small but exquisitely constructed exhibition. Visiting is as close as anyone can get to today to the paradise John Evelyn encountered... a remarkable achievement.
