Looking for a day out in the hills that’s a little off the beaten path? Join us for a guided walk to Drum, one of the quieter peaks in the Carneddau range of Eryri (Snowdonia) – a perfect mix of big views, fascinating history, and peaceful mountain atmosphere.

We’ll set off from a small roadside car park, about 5 minutes drive from the car park at Aber Falls. We'll start off steadily, walking part of an ancient Roman road and passing through Bwlch y Ddeufaen, where two mysterious standing stones have watched over the mountains for thousands of years. From the ridge line, you’ll enjoy sweeping views over Eryri, Anglesey, and even as far as the Isle of Man on a clear day. We'll descend to the stunning Llyn Anafon, and wander back to the car park alongside Afon Anafon and ancient cairns and hut circles.

What to expect:

  • Around 10 miles (16 km) with a steady climb (about 850m of ascent).
  • Moderate difficulty – suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and comfortable walking for 6 hours.
  • A relaxed pace with time to enjoy the views, take photos, and soak up the mountain air.

Meet your guide – Chris

Chris is the heart and soul behind outdoor adventures at Pen Y Bryn Outdoor Learning CIC. From climbing in the Peak District with his dad as a kid, to exploring the mountains of Wales, the Lake District, the Alps, and even East Africa, his life has always been guided by a love for the outdoors.

With decades of experience in outdoor education, Chris has worked in activity centres, schools, and alternative provision – even managing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for over a thousand participants. He’s a Gold Eryri Ambassador, meaning he’s passionate about sharing the rich history, culture, and environment of the National Park, while keeping everything safe and sustainable.

Chris is a Mountain Leader and Accredited Practitioner of the Institute for Outdoor Learning – but what really sets him apart is his genuine enthusiasm for helping people discover the joy of the mountains.

For £5 per person, you’ll get not only a safe and well-planned day in the hills, but a guide who’ll bring the mountains to life with stories, local insight, and encouragement every step of the way.

To make the most of your day, please bring:

  • Sturdy walking boots or shoes with good grip (no trainers).
  • Layered clothing – the weather can change quickly in the mountains.
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers.
  • Hat and gloves – even in summer, it can be breezy on the ridge.
  • Packed lunch and snacks to keep your energy up.
  • Plenty of water (at least 2 litres), plus a flask of warm drink.
  • Small backpack to carry your bits and pieces.
  • Sun cream, sunhat & sunglasses

Walking poles will be provided free of charge on this walk for extra comfort on the climbs and descents. Chris will carry group safety equipment and navigation tools, so you can just focus on enjoying the day.
