Some FAQs about our writing retreats:

- There’s no pressure to share your work, but we’re happy to discuss all things writing!

- No need to hit a certain word count.

- You can bring a notepad or laptop – there’s WiFi and plenty of charging points.

- Anyone who identifies as a woman or as non-binary is welcome to attend. We are an LGBTQ+ safe space and trans inclusive.

- If you need a discounted or free ticket and there are none available at checkout, please get in touch with us at womenwhowriteedinburgh@gmail.com, as we can usually help.

Women Who Write Edinburgh is a community of all kinds of women and NB writers at all stages of their writing journeys, from thesis writers to journal keepers to published novelists. We interpret the word 'writer' broadly: If you write, you’re welcome to join us.

We host free and paid events, including regular writing meets, retreats, critique sessions, as well as two annual challenges to help you hit your writing goals.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to be drafting, or can I work on other writing tasks?

Our retreats are there to give you the space and support to focus, so you are welcome to work on whatever helps you progress your project. That might be reading, outlining, drafting, editing, proofreading, or just browsing our resource table to get inspired. Your fellow writers will cheer you on!

Do I need to have written before/be published/achieved X to come along?

No! We have writers in our community putting their first words on the page, writers returning to projects, and writers decades into professional careers. Our retreats are for all women and non-binary writers at any stage of their writing journeys.

I don't identify as a woman or non-binary. Can I come along?

We appreciate your enthusiasm, but we host events that support women and NB people. Safe, supportive spaces for historically underrepresented groups in the writing world are still needed. If you like the sound of a day retreat, we recommend Writer's HQ, which runs similar events at Tribe!

I have booked an AM or PM session. When should I arrive?

AM ticket holders are welcome from 9:30 am through the end of lunch at 1:45 pm. PM ticket holders can arrive from the start of lunch (1:00 pm) and will depart with other attendees at 4:30pm.

Do I have to go on the walk?

No! We recognise everyone has different abilities and needs. If you would prefer to take a shorter walk or stay behind, that's totally fine. You can also book an AM-only ticket if you prefer, as we will stay at Tribe for the duration of the morning.

Is there parking?

There is limited on-street parking. As with much of Edinburgh, it can be hard to find on a weekend morning! The nearest public parking is at Tumbles, a roughly fifteen-minute walk. There are bus stops two minutes' walk away. There is proper bench seating at the Town Hall stop (a four-minute walk).

What refreshments will be available?

We have black tea, fruit tea, hot chocolate and filter coffee, plus semi-skimmed, full-fat and oat milk. We cannot cater to allergies.

Can I listen to music?

Yes! Please bring headphones. We also have a retreat Spotify playlist you can add to, which we will (quietly!) play throughout the day on our speaker.
