About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

In 1919 Vienna became one of the first major cities in Europe to be governed by a socialist council.

An ambition plan of housing building was launched supported by parks, gardens, kindergartens, schools, clinics, dentists, mother and baby centres, theatres, cinemas, artists studios, libraries and much more.

Over 64,000 homes were built, many designed by leading architects of the day, on the principles of air, light, hygiene and space. Attention was paid to building quality and architectural detail and the housing was intended to be low-cost.

This was paid for by city wide, progressive taxes whereby the rich paid proportionately more.

This will be a gentle ramble exploring people, ideas and buildings.
