Internationally renowned pianist and VOCES8 Records artist Ralf Schnell returns to the VOCES8 Centre to celebrate the launch of his new CD 'Sergej Rachmaninov - Pictures and Fairy Tales'!

Many of Sergei Rachmaninov's works are inspired by myths and fairy tales from his native Russia, but also by literature and works of art from other cultures. ‘Sergej Rachmaninov - Pictures and Fairy Tales' combines twelve such works, a selection from the Préludes and Études-Tableaux, whose inspiration and musical effect are particularly striking. The programme includes Rachmaninov's most famous work, the Prélude Op. 3 No. 2, the very rarely performed Étude-Tableaux Op. 39 No. 2 “The Sea and the Seagulls” and Op. 33 No. 7 “The Farmers' Market”, the earth-shattering Op. 39 No. 5 and the last of the Préludes, the epic Op. 32 No. 13.

As with all his recital programmes, Ralf Schnell performs ‘Sergej Rachmaninov - Pictures and Fairy Tales' without a break or interruption. Welcome to an evening of mythical tales, intense beauty and fiery virtuosity.

Based in Germany, Ralf Schnell is a world-renowned classical pianist and composer, celebrated for his exceptional mastery of Rachmaninov, Chopin, and Brahms. His performances are a testament to his deep understanding of these composers’ intricate works. “This is the best Chopin I have ever heard!” states Karl Ulrich Schnabel, on a performance of Chopin’s 2nd Sonata from Schnell.

Ralf’s musical journey began in a small village in Europe, where he defied expectations by dedicating himself to the piano from a very young age. Despite early challenges, including a battle with Focal Dystonia, he made a triumphant return to the concert stage in 2023 to rave reviews.

Schnell’s mentors, including Darryl Rosenberg and Laurent Boullet, have shaped his unique approach to performance and composition. Influenced by the legendary Arthur Rubinstein, Schnell’s style is characterized by its narrative approach. His recital programs are thematic journeys, performed without breaks, allowing audiences to truly immerse themselves in the Classical music culture, in a unique way. He has graced some of the most prestigious concert stages around the world, having performed in Germany, Norway, United Kingdom, France and Latvia, to name a few.
