The Panel of Speakers

David Clough is Professor of Theological Ethics at the University of Chester and has just finished a term as President of the Society for the Study of Christian Ethics. He co-wrote Faith and Force: A Christian Debate about War(2007), debating just war and pacifism in a 21st century context, and has recently completed the landmark two-volume monograph On Animals (2012, 2019), on the place of animals in Christian theology and ethics. Senior Christian ethicists endorsing Volume II call it ‘remarkable and invaluable’. He is the founder of CreatureKind, a project aiming to engage Christians with farmed animal welfare and is Principal Investigator on an AHRC-funded project on the Christian Ethics of Farmed Animal Welfare in partnership with UK churches.

Sasha Lawson-Frost is completing her first year BPhil at the University of Oxford and working on the ethics of Iris Murdoch, Simone Weil and Animal Ethics. Sasha’s research into animal ethics addresses questions of what it means to love and attend to non-human animals. Sasha has brought these important inquiries and research into the Quaker Concern for Animals where she has organised inter species meetings for worship at a sanctuary for rescued farmed animals.

Jordi Casamitjana has been an ethical vegan for over 17 years and he recently achieved notoriety for initiating a legal process which may lead to securing the legal protection of UK ethical vegans from discrimination. By training he is a Zoologist specialising in animal behaviour (Ethologist). He has been involved in different aspects of animal protection for many years. With over 20 years of experience working in animal protection campaigning at different levels. In addition to scientific research, Jordi's most notable work achievements have been his involvement with the first successful prosecutions under the Hunting Act 2004 whilst he was working for the League Against Cruel Sports, in the exposé of trail hunting as a false alibi for illegal hunters and his participation in the campaign that led to the ban on bullfighting in Catalonia. Under the pen name J.C. Costa, Jordi has also published a novel titled “The Demon’s Trial”.

John Oberg is a social media professional, influencer and animal advocate dedicated to making the world a kinder place for animals by utilizing the power of social media. He recently launched his own platform for the advancement of animal rights. Prior to that, he served as Director of New Media for the international animal protection organization, The Humane League. And prior to that, John served as Director of Communications for Vegan Outreach. In both of these roles, John oversaw social media for the organizations which led to a tenfold increase in following in both, as well as over 1 billion views of content posted to these pages.
