Event Details

The TUC are developing a programme of work around how well the financial sector delivers for industry and workers.

We are inviting participants from across the financial sector, trade unions, academia and civil society, and hope that you will be willing to attend and lend you expertise to this and/or the other discussions.

The present landscape: what are the strengths and weaknesses of the UK financial sector?
Wednesday 28 June, 2-4pm in Congress House

This roundtable will outline the strengths and weaknesses of the current UK financial sector, in terms of its ability to support business growth and decent jobs across the UK. Speakers will be Mick McAteer of the financial inclusion centre, who has recently completed an ‘economic and social audit of the city’, Ged Nicholls, General Secretary of the Accord Union, which represents workers in the financial sector, and Rick Watson, Managing Director and Head of Capital Markets from the Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME).

Room for manoeuvre: how much does the global monetary system constrain the UK’s economic choices?
Wednesday 9 August, 2-4pm in Congress House

This roundtable will discuss the extent to which the UK’s economy is influenced by policy choices made at international level. We hope that the discussion will cover the impact of globalisation, financial liberalisation (and alternatives, for example the use of capital controls and the Robin Hood tax), and how the UK can seek to influence international financial institutions. Speakers will represent the views of economists and international political economy alongside campaigners in this field.

Policy and prospects for change: how can the financial sector better serve the economy?
Wednesday 20 September, 2-4pm, Congress House

This roundtable will aim to bring together the conclusions of the previous two, and discuss options for the reform of the financial sector, bearing in mind also the incoming government’s (whoever they are!) industrial strategy. We expect the discussion to cover the Vickers review, the role of capital requirements and other lending controls, and the potential for regional banking to play a larger role in the economy.
