Event description

Learn to build serverless apps with cloud functions by competing in cloud tank warfare. A day of fun, games and coding!

Serverless Code Camp is a community event for software developers interested in migrating to serverless architectures, or learning more about modern cloud deployment architectures.

Learn how to build and deploy serverless apps though a hands-on, interactive competition. You'll create cloud functions to control virtual tanks, deploy them to serverless platforms such as AWS Lambda and Azure Functions, and wire them up to participate in a live tournament. Check out the highlights from the first Serverless Code Camp to get a taste of what you'll be building. May the best cloud function win.

You'll learn about emerging serverless/cloud function platforms, exchange experiences and share tips and tricks with other participants, and have a chance to diabolically laugh as your tank destroys the opponents.

Please note: this is a peer-pressure learning event, not a training workshop. Come expecting to do some digging, poking, experimenting and research on your own, with the help of the other participants. Gojko Adzic will facilitate the event, provide guidance and a few useful examples, but don't expect powerpoint slides and passive lectures.

Rough schedule:

09:30 - 10:00 Introduction to AWS Lambda and API Gateway
10:00 - 10:30 First workshop: make a simple cloud function and try out the serverless cloud infrastructure
10:45 - 11:00 Intro to Tank warfare API
11:00 - 12:30 Second workshop: Build a simple serverless tank controller, wire it up to AWS
13:30 - 15:00 Third workshop: Build a clever tank controller, practice updating/deploying to cloud, learn how to run multiple versions of serverless APIs at the same time.
15:15 - 16:15 Tournament: watch and cheer as the cloud tanks battle it out.
16:15 - 16:30 Conclusions, discussions, closing the day

Intended audience/prerequisites

This is primarily a day for developers working with cloud-based apps, or wanting to migrate from on-premise to cloud.

The basic examples will be in JavaScript, so some basic knowledge of JavaScript is required to participate. If JS is not your primary platform, don’t worry, you don’t need to know any advanced stuff. The participants will work in pairs, and we'll try to pair up people with different skillsets, for best peer-learning results. You’re welcome to build tanks in Java, Python, .NET or anything else that can be deployed to the Cloud, of course.

We recommend that you bring your own laptop, and pre-install Node.js (at least 4.3.2) and NPM.

You'll also need an AWS account (register at
