Description

Service design in practice

This course is for people who have already attended the 1 day Introduction to service design course and would like to know more about the practice of service design.

We will explore how to use some common service design tools, discuss some of the barriers service design faces and deep dive into other topics in service design.

Price: Free
Duration: 2 days

Who should take part

You should take part if you work in the public sector and are interested in knowing more about how to practice service design.

Eligibility

  • You must be based in Wales or Bristol (you either live in Wales or Bristol and/or your primary workplace is in Wales or Bristol).
  • You must have attended the 1 day Introduction to service design course offered by GDS.
  • You must currently have a job as a public servant or civil servant. This means you are working in a central government department, local government, NHS, Parliament, arms-length body or regulator.
  • You must be able to attend the whole of both days, from 9:45am to 5pm.
  • This course is not for people who are already service designers.

About the course

This course is not intended to turn you into a service designer.

The training contains some theory and lots of paper-based exercises and activities (individual, in pairs and in groups). You'll meet lots of people from many different roles and organisations in government. You do not need to prepare anything and slides will be provided.

We will cover most of these topics:

  • Service design tools and methods
  • Pitfalls and challenges of service design
  • Case studies
  • Service design for policy
  • Service design for operations
  • Service design in agile
  • Service design before discovery starts
  • Inclusive services
  • Doing service design when it's not greenfield
  • Convincing and influencing people of the value of service design

Convince your boss

Here is a letter to help you get approval to attend the full day training course. Copy the justification letter from Google Drive or copy and paste from the published version.

This is a great blog post by Benjy Stanton from the ONS, which talks about why service design is important.

On the day

Arrive before 9:45am ready for a 10:00 start and we will finish at 5pm on both days.

Lunch will be at approximately 12:30 for approximately an hour and there will be a short break in the morning and afternoon. There is a canteen and coffee shop on site.

Please be aware that car parking is not available on site. There is a train station in Newport Centre nearby with public transport (bus and taxi) available.

You must bring your Whitehall Common Civil Service Pass to access the site. If you do not have a Whitehall Common Civil Service Pass, you must bring your government staff pass and another form of photo ID to access the site. If you do not bring these, you will be given an escorted visitor lanyard and must be accompanied at all times.

Please commit to the whole of both days. If you are unable to attend for the whole of both days, please let us know. We prefer not to have people leave early, start late or drop in and out of the day as it is unfair to the other group members and people on the waiting list.

If there is anything we can do to enable you to be able to fully participate in this course, contact the GDS UCD team.

Please be prepared to give us feedback on the session as it is always being iterated!
