Description

Service Mapping Masterclass

This master class is for people who have already attended the 1-day introduction to service design course at GDS and would like to learn more about mapping techniques and practices.

We will:

  • explore how to use different kinds of maps and mapping techniques in service transformation;

  • learn how to decide which maps are most useful in which contexts;

  • try out creating various maps;

  • look at the history of maps in service organisations in the last 40 years and

  • discuss the application of maps in government today

Why you should take part

You should take part if you work in the public sector and are interested in mapping services and user journeys.

Eligibility

You must have attended the 1-day Introduction to service design course offered by GDS.

You must currently have a job as a public servant or civil servant. This means you are working in a central government department, local government, NHS, Parliament, arms-length body or regulator.

You must be a permanent employee of the government, not a contractor or supplier to government.

You must be able to attend the whole day, from 9:45 am to 3 pm.

This course is not for people who are already service designers.

We will be collecting diversity information in the application form so that we can ensure there is a diverse representation of people attending the course.

About the course

This course is not intended to turn you into a service designer.

The training contains some theory and various paper-based exercises and activities (individual, in pairs and in groups). You’ll meet people from many different roles and organisations in government. You do not need to prepare anything and slides will be provided.

We will cover most of these topics:

  • Different kinds of maps and mapping approaches

  • Stakeholder mapping

  • Service blueprints and service blueprinting

  • User journey mapping

  • Examples of service mapping activities in government

  • History of maps in service organisations

On the day

Arrive before 9:45 am ready for a 10 am start and we’ll finish at 3 pm. Lunch will be at approximately 1 pm for approximately an hour and there will be a short break in the morning. Please bring lunch or lunch money as food will not be provided.

More information

In the Service Manual, there are useful chapters on creating a service experience map and mapping a user’s whole problem.
