Event description

Description

Guest speaker: Mark Thompson, Ryder Architecture

Mark Thompson, managing partner of award-winning international design practice Ryder Architecture, will talk to Service Network members about Ryder’s remarkable journey and where the outward-looking firm is now heading. Mark, as an experienced business leader and North East LEP board member will also discuss wider challenges facing businesses in the North East and opportunities for growth.

Ryder Architecture is in the top ten of UK ‘Best Places to Work’, according to the influential Sunday Times’ 2017 awards. The firm has an impressive track record of creating the region’s contemporary cityscape. It has designed many North East landmarks, such as Newcastle City library, Science Central, Newcastle Central Station, Nissan, Hitachi and Ashington Leisure Centre. It is also commissioned on a range of UK-wide projects worth from £50,000 to £300m in the civic, education, healthcare, manufacturing, office, residential, leisure, science and transport sectors.

Mark Thompson and Peter Buchan took over Ryder in 1994, with a blueprint setting out the direction of growth. It now has a thriving HQ at Cooper’s Studios in Newcastle, offices in London, Liverpool, Hong Kong and Vancouver, and alliances with firms in Barcelona, Budapest and Australia. Last year it achieved another successful year with a 41% rise in profits and staff numbers grew to 135.

Mark’s drive and energy lie behind Ryder’s continuing growth, and his talk promises to be inspiring and informative.

There will also be a rare chance to tour Cooper’s Studios, a Grade II listed building restored and converted into light, spacious office accommodation by Ryder, which has been its HQ since 2012. Cooper’s Studios was originally a ‘horse and carriage repository’ and Ryder retained key features and the original configuration, which included ramps to allow horses to walk up to first and second floor stalls; a central atrium, formerly the auction parade area; a first-floor ladies’ viewing gallery; and an open plan top floor.

The event will end with a light buffet networking lunch.
