About this event

Travel & Outdoor • Travel

A former professional surfer from San Diego, California, Emi is the co-founder of Coast 2 Coast, weaving investigation with imagination for learners and educators in fishing villages to strengthen meaningful relationships with themselves, one another, and their built-natural environment through awe-inspiring learning experiences. With over 15 years of experience in "edutainment," youth action research, and participatory audiovisual storytelling, she has lived and worked with remote coastal communities around the world, including in India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Colombia, and the Solomon Islands, exploring nature connectedness, well-being, and optimistic futures for small-scale fisheries.

Emi earned her BA in Psychology with concentrations in Anthropology and Justice & Peace Studies from Georgetown University and her Master's in Marine Conservation & Biodiversity from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She is a Fulbright Fellow, WISE Emerging Leader, National Geographic Explorer, and a proud member of the Scientific Exploration Society based in Lobitos, a remote fishing village in Northern Peru.

Join us for an exciting talk on Ông Nam Hải: The Quest for Lord Fish, led by Emi, our 2022 Elodie Sandford Explorer. She will share captivating stories and visuals from her participatory expedition exploring the hidden whale temples along Vietnam’s coastline, where ancient whale worship traditions intersect with modern environmental challenges.

Through firsthand accounts and stunning visuals, discover how these sacred sites, integral to the spiritual and ecological fabric of fishing communities, are adapting to the pressures of industrialization and climate change. Learn how Vietnamese marine scientists, elders, and local youth are working together to revitalize these traditions and promote marine conservation for fishful futures and sustainable coastal communities.
