About this event

SES member Gaelin Rosenwaks is a marine scientist, explorer, photographer, and filmmaker who began diving at 14 and has since continued exploring ocean ecosystems. She began her career at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducting research in Antarctica and went onto earn her Master’s Degree in Coastal Environmental Management. She founded Global Ocean Exploration Inc (GOE) to share her passion for ocean exploration, marine conservation, and storytelling. She now participates and conducts expeditions in every ocean to alert the public not only to the challenges facing the oceans but also to what science is doing to understand these changes.

In her talk, “Tales of the Open Ocean: Adventures at Sea,” Gaelin will take you on a journey from satellite tagging Bluefin Tuna in the Western Atlantic Ocean to drilling ice cores in the frozen Bering Sea to the bottom of the Blue Hole in Belize, in order to illuminate cutting-edge scientific research being conducted to understand the complexity of our ocean ecosystems. Driven by her academic background in marine science and conservation, Gaelin hopes to heighten people’s awareness and sense of responsibility to preserve the health of our planet. By employing photography and video to document her exploration, she hopes to inspire people to appreciate the beauty of our oceans and the natural world. She will also talk about her current film in production, Finding Physty, about her personal connection with sperm whales.

Organiser Scientific Exploration Society

Organiser of SES Explorer Talk: Gaelin Rosenwaks - Tales of the Open Ocean

Scientific Exploration Society (SES) is a UK-based charity (No 267410) that was founded in 1969 by Colonel John Blashford-Snell and colleagues. It is the longest-running scientific exploration organisation in the world. Each year through its Explorer Awards programme, SES provides grants to individuals leading scientific expeditions that focus on discovery, research, and conservation in remote parts of the world offering knowledge, education, and community aid. Post-expedition reports are produced, detailing the scientific research undertaken, and are disseminated to relevant organisations and via SES channels, helping to raise awareness of the issues. Members and friends enjoy charity events and regular Explorer Talks and are also given opportunities to go on exciting scientific expeditions through SES Endorsed Expeditions.

SES has an excellent Honorary Advisory Board consisting of famous explorers and naturalists including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Dr Jane Goodall, Rosie Stancer, Pen Hadow, Bear Grylls, Mark Beaumont, Tim Peake, Steve Backshall, Vanessa O’Brien, and Levison Wood. Without its support, and that of its generous benefactors, members, trustees, volunteers, and part-time staff, SES would not achieve all that it does.
