Event description

Description

Speaker for the May SES@GauchoCity event is leading Desert Explorer and SES Member Sam McConnell.

Since 1997 Sam has led over one hundred teams in deserts across Africa and the Middle East, from the Namib & Kalahari to the Sinai and the Western & Eastern Deserts, Sudan and Jordan.

In 2002 he walked solo and unsupported across the Dune Sea of the Namib Desert, in 2016 he traversed the Sinai desert the first of four times with camels. 2011 found him leading a group of nine people on foot and unsupported up the Skeleton Coast to the Kunene River and the Angolan boarder - a world’s first! Sam was then Chief Leader for three further expeditions to Namibia for the British Exploring society.

In 2015, along with many other nominations, he was part of a team that won the Shackleton Trophy and Ulysses Trust prize for the best reserve forces expedition and 2016 saw him being made a member of the Egyptian Geographical Society. Sam is also fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Egyptian Desert Association. He lives on a boat in Little Venice, London and is currently learning to fly helicopters.

Sam has recently returned from trekking with camels across the Eastern desert of Egypt, from the Red Sea to the Nile following sections of the 2,000 year old Nova Via Hadrianus. During the desert crossing the team explored the ruins of Mons Claudianus and the pre-dynastic rock art of Wadi Um Salamat.

Sam’s 30 minute talk, supported by stills and video will give a brief insight into what it’s like to travel across a desert in a way that hasn’t changed for 3,000 years and will discuss the rich and diverse history of the Eastern Desert, known as the Red Land.
