Setting in Practice

Understanding how to evaluate the setting of heritage assets and the nature of impacts upon it

This course will introduce local authority entry-level heritage and non-heritage professionals with a heritage remit in their roles to the principles that underpin the setting of heritage assets. The course will provide a fundamental level of confidence in considering the setting of heritage assets and how development can both harm and enhance our experience of the historic environment.

The courses is for local authority planning officers and early career postgraduate heritage professionals working in the public sector only. Essentials courses are not open to individuals working in the private sector. Skills introduced are essential for development managers, strategic planners and those looking to establish a grounding in planning for the historic environment.

10:00 - Welcome and introduction

10:10 - What is Setting and why is it important?

Introduction to setting, how we define it and the legislative and policy framework that underpins its consideration in planning.

10:40 - The Heritage Values: Identifying and Articulating Significance

A framework for identifying and articulating significance in planning with heritage assets

11:10 - Break - With opportunities for networking and discussion with heritage experts

11:20 - Exercise: Assigning Value and Significance

Practical exercise using the ‘Heritage Values’ as a way of expressing heritage significance

11:45 - A Guide to Assessing Setting: Steps 1 and 2

12:15 - Practical Session: Setting Analysis

A chance to go out into the local area and undertake an evaluation of the significance and setting of designated heritage assets

13:00 - Lunch - With opportunities for networking and discussion with heritage experts

13:50 - Exercise: Development and Setting Part 1

14:30 - A Guide to Assessing Setting: Steps 3, 4 & 5

15:00 - Break - With opportunities for networking and discussion with heritage experts

15.10 - Exercise: Development and Setting Part 2

Booking is essential for all courses as places are limited.

Please note, these training events are provided free of charge by Historic England, and places are at a premium. You can send a replacement or notify us by e mail if you book and then can’t attend. Non-attendance will incur a fee of £150 unless you contact us at least 5 days in advance.

Please also be aware photography or filming may take place at events for promotional use.
